THE KEY TAKEAWAY

Specify the complete card structure before selecting an individual layer.

Begin with the finished card

Before comparing materials, describe the card you want to make. Record its intended use, printing method, finished thickness and any features that must be incorporated. A material name alone does not describe the complete requirement.

A useful enquiry includes a simple layer sequence, even if some details are still undecided. Mark which layers carry printing, which form part of the inlay construction and which are intended to protect the printed surface. This gives the supplier a clearer starting point.

Give each layer a clear role

The core forms the body of the card and can serve as a printing or supporting layer. A coated overlay is a transparent film with an adhesive coating used in the lamination structure. They have different roles, so choosing one does not remove the need to specify the other.

When discussing a combination, ask for the grade information applicable to each layer. Keep the core and overlay references together in your project records rather than treating the two purchase lines as unrelated materials.

Evaluate the combination you will actually use

Discuss compatibility in the context of your own core, printing ink and lamination process. A successful result with one construction should not be assumed to apply to every other combination.

Use representative samples and document the actual process conditions. Agree which observations and tests matter to your project before the evaluation starts. The purpose is to establish an acceptable combination for your application, rather than select a material on appearance alone.

Prepare a clearer supplier enquiry

If you already have a specification, share it alongside the proposed layer structure. If you do not, explain what is known and which points need discussion. Keep assumptions visible so they can be confirmed before an order.

  • Core and overlay material or grade, if known
  • Thickness and dimensions for each supplied layer
  • Printing method and intended card application
  • Quantity, destination and evaluation requirements

Use this guide to prepare your material discussion. Confirm grade-specific technical data, sample results and order terms for your own project.
